What is a Vaginal Infection

Vaginal infection or Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina. It’s caused due to an imbalance of yeast and bacteria that live in the vagina.

Types of Vaginal infection:

Vaginal Candidiasis

Is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida albicans, in the vaginal area.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

Is caused due to change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria; note that this will not cause any health problems but can be a bit problematic if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

Chlamydia

This is a common Sexually Transmitted Disease [STD] both in men and women of all ages.

Gonorrhea

This is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection, which if not treated can cause infertility.

You should consult your gynaecologist when you experience

  • Itching, burning, rashes, soreness in the vagina
  • Heavier, different colored and smelling discharge
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse
  • Redness or swelling of the vulva
  • Vaginal rash

What causes Vaginal infection

  • Usage of antibiotics
  • Consumption of high-dose oestrogen birth control pills
  • Spermicidal contraceptives
  • Douching
  • Tight fitting / synthetic underwear

What not to use for Vaginal infection

Perfumed soaps, washes, douches in and around the vaginal area

Your daily vaginal hygiene

  • Use clean and cotton undergarments only
  • Use breathable underwear
  • Wash the area around the vagina with plain water every day
  • Avoid wearing tight garments
